Days after his top spokesperson announced her resignation from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department, effective Feb. 2, Arizona lawman Joe Arpaio became the subject of rumors that he, too, was on his way out of a post he has held for more than two decades.
Arpaio, often referred to as “the nation’s toughest sheriff,” addressed media rumblings that he will be resigning in the near future.
“Contrary to multiple media reports, I am NOT resigning as Sheriff,” he wrote in a Facebook post Tuesday. “I appreciate the calls from citizens of Maricopa County and beyond that have called my office encouraging me to stay.”

“We need more Americans like you in office,” one Facebook user wrote. “I hope to meet you soon so I can say I have met a great American.”
At least one individual who encountered Arpaio from the wrong side of the law chimed in with some praise for the strict sheriff.
Explaining he had spent 30 days in the custody under Arpaio’s watch, the social media commenter revealed that he has “more respect” for the controversial lawman “than real crooks in [W]ashington.”
The former inmate went on to suggest Arpaio should be in charge of the federal prison system.
